Getting the Red

Ribbon Treatment

—Hudson—

Smokey is so excited about going to the festival that she keeps jumping and rolling around the room and bouncing herself off every piece of furniture in the place.

“Hey, settle down,” I say after she knocks Grace’s clothes off the bed for the third time. Grace’s in the shower, but as soon as she finishes up, she’ll get dressed and we can go.

Smokey’s only answer is a high-pitched yowl. Followed by a leap onto my lap, where she bounces up and down a dozen times before winding herself around my neck. Except she’s so excited that she squeezes a little too tightly.

“Smokey, come on!” I gasp out, prying her from my throat. “You’re going to strangle me.”

She mews sadly and cuddles into my chest as an apology. Then jumps down and starts spinning like a top in the middle of the room.

“Okay, okay! If I give you the present I got you now, will you settle down a little?”

She freezes so fast that she ends up stumbling and rolls halfway across the room before she manages to come to a stop.

She looks up at me, obviously embarrassed, so I do my best not to laugh as I scoop her off the ground. “Come on. It’s over here.”

On my way home from work today, I stopped into a boutique and bought Grace a new dress for tonight. I haven’t given it to her yet and I’m nervous she’ll hate it, but I wanted her to be able to go to the festival in something other than her getting-raggedier-by-the-day jeans.

At the store, I also saw a couple of things I thought Smokey might like, so I picked them up, too. “It’s nothing big,” I tell her as I reach for the bag.

She squeals to let me know it doesn’t matter, then practically vibrates with excitement as I open the bag and pull out her present.

Smokey screams when she sees the ribbons and snatches them out of my hands before I can even hand them to her. Then she dances around the room with them, chittering away as she twirls them with joy.

Apparently, ribbons were definitely the way to go.

I got her a pack of four different-colored ones—purple, gold, red, and rainbow—and I’m curious as to which one Smokey’s going to choose for tonight.

It turns out she chooses two of them—the rainbow one and the gold one—draping them around herself like they’re expensive diamonds instead of a few pieces of fabric. Once she’s satisfied with how they look on her, she takes the other two ribbons and tucks them into the small nightstand drawer we gave her to use for her treasures.

Then she launches herself at me and gives me what I’m pretty sure is the world’s most enthusiastic hug. She skips my throat this time, though, so at least I can breathe my way through it.

She’s still hugging me when Grace comes out of the bathroom wrapped in a towel a few minutes later. She freezes when she sees the newly decorated Smokey, then grins hugely.
